How We Help
We have various programs and projects that aim to improve the health of our lake.
Eurasion Milfoil Removal
Eurasian Milfoil is an invasive plant that is a problem in our lake. The APA suggested hand harvesting the plant, which requires a permit. It will take about two weeks of hand harvesting in late spring on an annual basis.
Lake Debris Removal
In late spring of 2020, volunteers successfully tagged and mapped lake debris from the Halloween Flood under the direction of the project leader. Some logs were removed, but there are many more logs and stumps that are too heavy for individuals and small craft. The township has sent out an RFP to hire a barge to take on this task.
Education
In September 2019, we hosted our first educational program, “Love Your Lake”, presented by Caitlin Stewart of Hamilton County Soil and Water. The program was well received by all who attended.
Geese Control
Various options for control of geese are being investigated including the process of addling the eggs by hand and hiring geese-control dogs. The latter involves specially-trained border collies that herd the geese, thus causing them to abandon their nesting sites. Over time this is an effective way to convince the geese that particular nesting areas are no longer desirable.
Sedimentation Control
Tons of sediment have entered the lake as a direct result of the banks upstream eroding during rain events. Friends met with Lenny Croote, Hamilton County Soil and Water, to discuss the Cave Bank Erosion Plan aimed at stabilizing the bank.
